> The Child Disability Benefit (CDB) is a tax-free supplement of up to $3,480 a year, or $290 a month, for each child under 18 who is approved for the disability tax credit. It is paid as part of the monthly Canada Child Benefit from July 2026 to June 2027, and it shrinks only when adjusted family net income passes $82,847.

## Key facts

- Maximum, July 2026 to June 2027: $3,480 a year ($290 a month) per child
- Main condition: Child approved for the disability tax credit (Form T2201)
- Income where reduction starts: $82,847 adjusted family net income
- Reduction rate: 3.2% (one eligible child) or 5.7% (two or more)
- Paid: In the same deposit as the CCB

## How much is the Child Disability Benefit?

For the July 2026 to June 2027 benefit year, the Child Disability Benefit pays up to $3,480 per eligible child, which is $290 a month. The amount is per child, so a family with two approved children can receive up to $6,960 a year before any income reduction.

Unlike the base CCB, the CDB is not reduced at modest incomes. The reduction starts only when adjusted family net income (AFNI) is above $82,847, the same second threshold used for the CCB. Payments for this period use 2025 income from both partners' returns.

| AFNI | One eligible child, per year | Two eligible children, per year |
| --- | --- | --- |
| $82,847 or less | $3,480 | $6,960 |
| $100,000 | $2,931.10 | $5,982.28 |
| $150,000 | $1,331.10 | $3,132.28 |
| About $191,600 | $0 | $761.08 |
| About $205,000 | $0 | $0 |

Child disability benefit amount after income, July 2026 to June 2027 (CRA rules, our calculations)

The math: for one child, subtract 3.2% of income above $82,847. For two or more eligible children, subtract 5.7% of income above $82,847 from the combined amount. At $100,000 with one child, the excess is $17,153, and 3.2% of that is $548.90, leaving $2,931.10, or about $244.26 a month.

## Child disability benefit eligibility

Two conditions must both be met. You must be eligible for the CCB for the child, and the child must be under 18 and eligible for the disability tax credit (DTC). There is no separate CDB application form.

- The child has a severe and prolonged impairment in physical or mental functions, certified by a medical practitioner on **Form T2201, Disability Tax Credit Certificate**.
- The CRA has approved that certificate. A signed form that is still under review does not start payments.
- You live with the child, are primarily responsible for the child's care, and are a resident of Canada for tax purposes, the same rules as the CCB.
- You and any spouse or common-law partner file a tax return every year.

Diagnosis alone does not decide DTC approval. The CRA looks at how the impairment affects daily activities such as walking, speaking, feeding, dressing or mental functions, and at whether it has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 months.

## How to get the disability supplement added to the CCB

1. Make sure the child is already on your CCB account. If not, apply through CRA My Account or Form RC66 first; see the [Canada Child Benefit guide](https://canadapaymentdates.com/child-benefit).
2. Complete Part A of Form T2201 as the parent, then ask the child's medical practitioner to complete Part B.
3. Send the form to the CRA through My Account or by mail, or have the practitioner submit it digitally where that option is offered.
4. Wait for the notice of determination on the DTC. Once approved, the CRA recalculates your CCB and adds the CDB automatically.
5. Check the next notice of redetermination. It lists the CDB as part of the monthly amount and shows any back payment.

> **One application covers both credits:** The same approved T2201 also lets a parent claim the child's unused disability amount on their own tax return. You do not file a second certificate for that.

## Is the Child Disability Benefit paid with CCB?

Yes. There is no separate deposit. The CDB is folded into the CCB payment that arrives around the 20th of each month; the [CCB payment dates](https://canadapaymentdates.com/child-benefit/ccb-payment-dates) page lists each 2026 date. The October payment arrived on October 20, 2026; the next two are November 20 and, paid early, December 11.

In shared custody, each parent receives 50% of the CCB they would get with full custody, and the disability supplement is part of that amount. Our [CCB shared custody](https://canadapaymentdates.com/child-benefit/ccb-shared-custody) page shows how the halves are worked out. Like the rest of the CCB, the CDB is not taxable and is not reported on your return; see [is CCB taxable](https://canadapaymentdates.com/child-benefit/is-ccb-taxable).

## Child disability benefit back payments

DTC approval often covers earlier years, so a first CDB payment can include a lump sum. If you already had the child on your CCB account, the CRA automatically calculates the CDB for the current payment period and the two previous CCB payment periods. This also applies if the child was registered under an earlier federal child benefit, such as the Canada child tax benefit.

| CCB payment period | How the CDB is paid |
| --- | --- |
| July 2026 to June 2027 (current period) | Calculated automatically |
| July 2025 to June 2026 | Calculated automatically |
| July 2024 to June 2025 | Calculated automatically |
| June 2024 and earlier | Only by written request to your tax centre, for years the DTC approval covers |

Which periods are paid automatically if the DTC is approved in late 2026

For periods before that, you have to send a written request to your tax centre. The CRA does not publish a form or a fixed time limit for this request; identify the child by name and date of birth and list the benefit years you are asking about. A request for earlier years only succeeds if the DTC approval covers them.

## What happens to the CDB at age 18

The CDB ends with the CCB. The final payment is in the month the child turns 18, at the same time as the last CCB payment described in [what age does CCB stop](https://canadapaymentdates.com/child-benefit/ccb-stop-age).

An adult with an approved DTC can then look at the federal [Canada Disability Benefit](https://canadapaymentdates.com/disability-benefits), which is a different program for working-age adults. It pays up to $204.20 a month for July 2026 to June 2027, based on the adult's own family income, and requires its own application.

## Step by step

1. **Confirm CCB.** Make sure the child is on your Canada Child Benefit account.
2. **Complete Form T2201.** Fill in Part A and have a medical practitioner complete Part B.
3. **Submit the form.** Send it through My Account, by mail, or digitally by the practitioner.
4. **Wait for approval.** The CRA issues a notice of determination for the disability tax credit.
5. **Check the recalculated CCB.** The CDB and any back payment appear on your notice of redetermination.

## Common questions

### How much is the child disability benefit per month?

Up to $290 a month per eligible child for July 2026 to June 2027, which is $3,480 a year. It is reduced only when adjusted family net income is above $82,847.

### Do I need to apply separately for the child disability benefit?

No. Once the CRA approves Form T2201 for a child already on your CCB account, it adds the CDB automatically.

### Can I get the child disability benefit with a high income?

Often yes. With one eligible child, the benefit does not reach zero until adjusted family net income is roughly $191,600.

### Is the child disability benefit the same as the Canada Disability Benefit?

No. The Child Disability Benefit is part of the CCB for children under 18. The Canada Disability Benefit is a separate monthly payment for adults with a disability tax credit certificate.

### How far back can the child disability benefit be paid?

The CRA automatically covers the current and two previous CCB payment periods. Earlier periods need a written request to your tax centre and a DTC approval that covers those years.

### Will the child disability benefit back pay go past two years?

Not automatically. The CRA pays the current CCB payment period and the 2 previous ones on its own, which can cover up to three benefit years of CDB. Anything earlier needs a written request to your tax centre and can only be paid for years the DTC approval covers. The CRA does not publish a fixed limit on how far back such a request can go.
