The full amount goes to those with adjusted family net income under $29,402. The CRA pays it automatically, usually on the 25th of the month, and it is tax-free.

- Application: None; the CRA uses your tax and DTC records

## What is the Newfoundland and Labrador Disability Benefit?

The Newfoundland and Labrador Disability Benefit is a provincial, tax-free monthly payment for working-age adults with a disability. The province funds it and the Canada Revenue Agency administers it, which is why it appears on the CRA's page of Newfoundland and Labrador programs and on the federal benefits calendar.

It pays up to $400 a month. That is almost twice the federal [Canada Disability Benefit](https://canadapaymentdates.com/disability-benefits) maximum of $204.20, and eligible residents can receive both.

## Who qualifies for the NL disability benefit?

According to the CRA (checked September 2026), you qualify for the NL disability benefit if all of these apply:

- You are a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador on the first day of the payment month.
- You are 18 to 64 years old.
- You have a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate.
- Your adjusted family net income (AFNI) is below $42,404 as an individual, or below $55,404 for a couple where both spouses or common-law partners have the DTC.

The residency test is applied month by month. Someone who moves to Nova Scotia in March stops qualifying from the first payment month in which they are no longer an NL resident on the 1st. Keep your address current with the CRA.

## How much is the NLDB, and how does income reduce it?

For July 2026 to June 2027 the NLDB pays the full $400 a month when AFNI is under $29,402. Between $29,402 and the upper limits it is a partial amount based on AFNI, and above the limits it is zero.

| Household | Full $400 if AFNI is under | Partial benefit range | No benefit at or above |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Individual with the DTC | $29,402 | $29,402 to $42,404 | $42,404 |
| Couple, one spouse with the DTC | $29,402 | $29,402 to $42,404 | $42,404 |
| Couple, both spouses with the DTC | $29,402 | $29,402 to $55,404 | $55,404 |

NLDB income thresholds, July 2026 to June 2027 (CRA)

The CRA page does not publish the exact reduction formula for the partial range, only that the amount is based on AFNI. Your CRA benefit notice shows the monthly figure you will actually receive. Unlike the federal CDB, the CRA's NLDB description does not mention a separate exemption for working income.

## NLDB payment dates for 2026

NLDB payments are normally issued on the 25th of each month. When the 25th is a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, the CRA pays on the last working day before it.

| Month | Date | Month | Date |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| January | January 23 | July | July 24 |
| February | February 25 | August | August 25 |
| March | March 25 | September | September 25 |

Newfoundland and Labrador Disability Benefit payment dates, 2026 (Canada.ca benefits calendar)

Official 2027 dates are not yet announced. Applying the CRA's stated rule gives a projection of January 25, February 25, March 25, April 23, May 25, June 25, July 23, August 25, September 24, October 25, November 25 and December 24, 2027. Treat those as estimates until the 2027 calendar is posted.

## How the NLDB works with the Canada Disability Benefit

Both programs require the Disability Tax Credit and both cover ages 18 to 64, but they are run differently. The biggest practical difference is that the federal benefit needs an application and the provincial one does not.

| | NL Disability Benefit | Canada Disability Benefit |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Maximum | $400 a month | $204.20 a month |
| Administered by | CRA | Service Canada |
| Application | None | Required |
| Full benefit if AFNI is | Under $29,402 | $23,000 or less (single) |
| Payment day | 25th or working day before | Third Thursday |
| Taxable | No | No |

NLDB and CDB compared, July 2026 to June 2027

### Example: receiving both

A single St. John's resident aged 45 with the DTC and AFNI of $20,000 would get the full NLDB of $400 and the full CDB of $204.20, for $604.20 a month or $7,250.40 a year. In October 2026 they come on different days: the CDB was paid on October 15 and the NLDB follows on October 23. The CDB dates are listed on [CDB payment dates](https://canadapaymentdates.com/disability-benefits/cdb-payment-dates).

At higher incomes the two phase out differently. With AFNI of $30,000 and no job income, the same person's CDB drops to about $87.53 a month under the federal 20% reduction, while the NLDB becomes a partial amount. The federal rules are on [CDB amount](https://canadapaymentdates.com/disability-benefits/cdb-amount).

## Is the NLDB taxable, and what keeps payments coming?

The NLDB is a tax-free benefit, so it is not reported on your return. Its federal counterpart is also tax-free, as covered on [is the CDB taxable](https://canadapaymentdates.com/disability-benefits/is-cdb-taxable).

1. File your tax return every year, even with no income, and make sure your spouse or partner files too.
2. Keep your DTC certificate valid. If it has an end date, start the renewal with Form T2201 before it lapses.
3. Update your address with the CRA if you move, particularly out of the province.
4. Check the CRA notice for the new amount each July.

Other provincial payments for Newfoundland and Labrador families, such as the NL Child Benefit and NL Income Supplement, are grouped on [provincial benefits in Canada](https://canadapaymentdates.com/provincial-benefits).
