> If you are wondering why is my OAS payment late, first confirm the scheduled date: the next Old Age Security (OAS) payments are October 28, November 26 and December 22, 2026. Service Canada says payments can take a few days to arrive and asks you to wait 5 to 10 business days before contacting it.

## Key facts

- Next OAS payment dates, 2026: October 28, November 26, December 22
- Wait before contacting Service Canada: 5 to 10 business days after the payment date
- Where to check payment status: My Service Canada Account
- Slowest delivery method: Mailed cheque
- 2027 OAS payment dates: Not yet announced (usually posted late in the year)

## Why is my OAS payment late? Start with this month's date

An Old Age Security payment is late only once the scheduled date has passed. Many people expect OAS at the start or middle of the month, but Service Canada pays OAS, the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) and the Allowance near the end of the month, on the same day as the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) ([Government of Canada, benefits payment dates](https://www.canada.ca/en/services/benefits/calendar.html)).

An OAS payment delay, in the sense Service Canada uses, is a payment that has not arrived after the 5 to 10 business days it asks you to allow. Before that point, a missing deposit is treated as still in transit, and staff generally cannot trace it.

| Month | OAS payment date | 10 business days later (approximate) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| October 2026 | Wednesday, October 28 | Wednesday, November 11 |
| November 2026 | Thursday, November 26 | Thursday, December 10 |
| December 2026 | Tuesday, December 22 | Early January 2027 (holidays extend the wait) |

The follow-up column counts weekdays only and does not subtract public holidays, which vary by province. For the full year, see the [OAS payment dates calendar](https://canadapaymentdates.com/oas-gis).

## Are OAS payments late this month for everyone?

A delay that affects everyone would be announced on canada.ca, usually on the benefits calendar or a news release. As of October 20, 2026, the calendar lists the October 28 payment with no notice of a system-wide delay. If no notice is posted, the problem is most likely specific to your file, your bank or the mail.

A useful check is to ask someone else who gets OAS by direct deposit at a different bank. If theirs arrived and yours did not, look at your own account details. If neither arrived by the evening of the payment date, the timing difference may simply be how each bank posts deposits, which our [CRA direct deposit time guide](https://canadapaymentdates.com/payment-problems/cra-direct-deposit-time) explains.

## Common reasons OAS payments are late

### You are paid by cheque

Service Canada notes that mailed cheques may take longer than direct deposit. A cheque issued on the payment date still has to travel through the mail before you can deposit it. Switching to direct deposit removes this delay for future months.

### Your bank details changed recently

Direct deposit for OAS and CPP is managed by Service Canada, not the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). If you changed banks with the CRA only, your OAS still goes to the old account. If that account was closed, the deposit is rejected and returned, and a new payment has to be reissued. Our [CPP direct deposit guide](https://canadapaymentdates.com/cpp/cpp-direct-deposit) walks through the Service Canada change, which also covers OAS.

### It is your first payment

Your approval letter states the month your OAS starts and the amount. If you expected money for an earlier month, compare the letter with your application date before treating the payment as late.

### A holiday falls near the payment date

December causes the most confusion, because the payment moves up to December 22, earlier than in other months, and Christmas Day and Boxing Day follow soon after, so any follow-up takes longer. Our page on [benefit payments over a long weekend](https://canadapaymentdates.com/payment-calendar/benefit-payments-long-weekend) shows how holidays shift posting.

### Your file is on hold

A payment that never arrives, month after month, is not late: it has stopped. Unfiled tax returns, a long stay abroad or a missing OAS Return of Income for non-residents can stop or suspend payments. Our [OAS payments stopped guide](https://canadapaymentdates.com/payment-problems/oas-payments-stopped) covers those causes.

## What to do if your OAS payment is late

1. Confirm the payment date for this month on the Government of Canada benefits calendar.
2. Check your bank account again the next business day. Posting times vary from one bank to another.
3. Sign in to My Service Canada Account and open the OAS section to see the last payment issued, the amount and whether it went by deposit or cheque.
4. Confirm that the bank account and mailing address on file with Service Canada are current.
5. Wait the full 5 to 10 business days from the payment date.
6. If the payment has still not arrived, contact Service Canada through the contact page for Old Age Security on canada.ca and ask for a payment trace.
7. Keep the date and a reference number for the call. If a cheque turns up after a replacement is issued, do not cash both.

> **Do not close the old account yet:** If you are moving your OAS to a new bank, leave the old account open until the first payment lands in the new one. A deposit sent to a closed account has to be returned and reissued, which is one of the longest delays.

## When should I call about an OAS payment delay?

Call once 5 to 10 business days have passed and your My Service Canada Account shows the payment was issued, or sooner if the account shows no payment at all for the month. Contacting Service Canada before the waiting period ends usually gets the advice to wait.

The CRA cannot help with OAS: it does not administer OAS, CPP or Employment Insurance. For CRA benefits such as the Canada Child Benefit, the waiting periods are different, and our [benefit payment not received hub](https://canadapaymentdates.com/payment-problems) lists each one. If a CPP deposit is also missing the same day, see [CPP payment not deposited](https://canadapaymentdates.com/payment-problems/cpp-payment-not-deposited), since both usually share the same bank details.

## Common questions

### What day does OAS come in October 2026?

The October 2026 OAS payment date is Wednesday, October 28, the same day as CPP. November's payment is on November 26 and December's on December 22.

### Why did my OAS not come in today when my CPP did?

OAS and CPP are issued on the same date, so a split usually means one benefit has a different bank account, a hold, or a first payment still being processed. Check both sections in My Service Canada Account.

### How long does an OAS cheque take to arrive?

Service Canada does not publish a delivery time for cheques, only that they may take longer than direct deposit. Allow the full 10 business days before asking for a trace.

### Will I get paid if my OAS was sent to a closed bank account?

A deposit to a closed account is rejected and does not reach you, so the payment has to be reissued after Service Canada has your new banking details. Update your details and ask Service Canada about the returned payment once the waiting period has passed.

### Have the 2027 OAS payment dates been released?

Not as of October 20, 2026. The Government of Canada usually posts the next year's calendar late in the year, and past OAS dates have fallen in the last week of each month with December earlier.
