What is the Alberta Seniors Benefit?
The Alberta Seniors Benefit (ASB) is a monthly payment from the Government of Alberta to seniors with low income. It is separate from the federal Old Age Security (OAS) pension and Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS): the province runs it, you apply to the province, and it arrives as its own deposit on its own schedule.
The amount depends on where you live and your income from the previous calendar year. Seniors in a continuing care home can receive far more than those living in their own home, because the benefit helps cover accommodation charges.
Alberta Seniors Benefit eligibility: who qualifies?
You can qualify for the Alberta Seniors Benefit if you meet all the conditions Alberta.ca lists. Benefits can start in the month you turn 65.

Income limits from July 1, 2026
The province sets an annual income limit of $32,690 for a single senior and $53,800 combined for a couple, effective July 1, 2026. Income is measured for the previous calendar year, January to December, and several types of income are left out before the benefit is worked out, as the next section shows.
Because OAS is required, newcomers who do not yet meet the federal residence rule cannot receive the ASB. The OAS rule of at least 10 years in Canada after age 18 is explained on OAS residency requirements.
How much does the Alberta Seniors Benefit pay?
The maximum Alberta Seniors Benefit is $3,946 a year for a single senior who owns a home, rents or lives in a lodge, and $5,918 a year for a couple in the same situation, according to Alberta.ca. Residents of continuing care homes can receive up to $12,466 (single) or $16,412 (couple).
| Where you live | Single senior | Senior couple | Single, about a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Own home, rented home or lodge | $3,946 | $5,918 | $328.83 |
| Continuing care home | $12,466 | $16,412 | $1,038.83 |
| Other residence | $2,749 | $5,496 | $229.08 |
What income counts against the benefit
The benefit is reduced for each dollar of non-deductible income. Alberta starts from total income on your tax return and removes OAS (line 11300), net federal supplements such as GIS and the Allowance (line 14600), social assistance (line 14500), RDSP income (line 12500), registered pension plan and RRSP deductions, pension income splitting (line 21000), the CPP death benefit, and up to $3,600 of employment income.
Worked example of non-deductible income
A single senior in Red Deer reports 2025 total income of $27,200: $8,900 OAS, $1,200 GIS, $11,000 CPP, $4,500 part-time wages and $1,600 from a small workplace pension. Alberta removes the OAS, the GIS and $3,600 of the wages, leaving $13,500 of non-deductible income. The province then applies its reduction rate for a single homeowner to that $13,500, so the payment lands somewhere below the $3,946 maximum; the approval letter shows the exact figure.
Alberta Seniors Benefit payment dates for 2026

These dates come a few days before the federal OAS and GIS deposits, which for the rest of 2026 fall on October 28, November 26 and December 22. The federal dates are on OAS payment dates. How do I apply for the Alberta Seniors Benefit?
Apply with the Seniors Financial Assistance application. The province accepts it online through its Seniors Financial Assistance portal at sfa.alberta.ca, or as a printed form sent by mail or fax.
- Apply for OAS with Service Canada first, since the Alberta benefit depends on it; the ASB can start in the month you turn 65.
- Complete the Seniors Financial Assistance application, including your spouse or partner's information, since couples are assessed on combined income.
- If you did not file a tax return for the previous year, complete the province's Income information form.
- Keep filing a return every year so Alberta can check your income without a new application.
- Report changes of address, marital status, income or OAS status to Seniors Financial Assistance.
