Benefit payment not received: waiting periods, checks and who to contact
If a benefit payment was not received, first wait out the official grace period: 5 working days for the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) and Alberta Child and Family Benefit, and 10 working days for other CRA payments such as the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB). Service Canada asks for 5 to 10 business days on CPP and OAS. Then check your online account before calling.

What to do when a benefit payment is not received
A benefit payment not received on its scheduled date is usually late, not lost. The Government of Canada says payments are issued on the listed dates but may take a few days to arrive, and mailed cheques take longer than direct deposit (Government of Canada, benefits payment dates).
A missing benefit payment is any scheduled federal or provincial benefit deposit or cheque that has not reached you after the official waiting period has passed. Until that period is over, neither the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) nor Service Canada will open a trace.

The first job is to work out which agency pays the benefit. The CRA runs the tax-based benefits (CCB, CGEB, Canada Workers Benefit advances, Ontario Trillium Benefit and most provincial child and sales tax credits). Service Canada, part of Employment and Social Development Canada, runs the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), Old Age Security (OAS), the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) and the Canada Disability Benefit.

Why did I not receive my benefit payment today? Most payments are issued on the scheduled date but can take a few days to arrive, especially cheques.
How long should I wait before calling about a missing payment?
Wait 5 working days for the CCB and the Alberta Child and Family Benefit, and 10 working days for every other CRA benefit, counted from the payment date (CRA, benefit payment dates). Service Canada's calendar asks people to wait 5 to 10 business days before contacting the program for its benefits.

| Payment | Payment date | Waiting rule | Report it from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canada Child Benefit | October 20, 2026 | 5 working days | October 28, 2026 |
| Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit | October 5, 2026 | 10 working days (Thanksgiving October 12 not counted) | October 21, 2026 |
| Ontario Trillium Benefit | October 9, 2026 | 10 working days (Thanksgiving not counted) | October 27, 2026 |

| Canada Child Benefit (December) | December 11, 2026 | 5 working days | December 21, 2026 |
Weekends and statutory holidays do not count as working days, so a Monday holiday pushes the date you can call by one day. The full schedule for every program is on the CRA payment dates calendar.
How do I check my payment status online?
Check CRA payments in CRA My Account and CPP or OAS payments in My Service Canada Account. Each account shows the amount issued, the date and whether it went by direct deposit or cheque, which answers most questions without a phone call.
CRA My Account (CCB, CGEB, ACWB, provincial credits)
- Benefits and credits: shows the next payment, recent payments and the amount for each program.
- Personal profile: shows the mailing address and direct deposit account the CRA will use.
- Mail: holds letters asking for documents. An unanswered letter is a common reason a payment stops.
- Notices: the notice of determination or redetermination explains any change in the amount.
My Service Canada Account (CPP, OAS, GIS)
My Service Canada Account shows CPP and OAS payment information. OAS recipients can update their address and banking there, but CPP recipients cannot yet change personal information in the account and must request a callback, visit an office or call (Service Canada, change your personal information).
Why did my benefit payment stop?
The CRA lists the same core reasons for stopped payments across its programs: an unfiled tax return, an unanswered CRA letter, an out-of-date address or bank account, a change in marital status, income that is now too high, and no longer meeting residency rules (CRA, CGEB payments stop or change).
| Reason | Programs affected | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| You or your partner did not file a 2025 return | CCB, CGEB, provincial credits, GIS | File the return; payments resume after it is assessed |
| Unanswered CRA letter or review | CCB, CGEB | Send the requested documents through My Account |
| Old address or closed bank account | All programs | Update the address and banking with the agency that pays you |
| Marital status changed | CCB, CGEB, GIS | Report the change; the amount is recalculated |
| Income too high after July recalculation | CCB, CGEB, OTB | No fix; check the notice of redetermination |
| Small annual amount paid as a lump sum | CCB under $240, CGEB under $50 a quarter | Nothing missing; the year was paid in July |
The July recalculation catches many people out. The CCB and the CGEB are both reset every July using the previous year's return, so July 2026 payments use 2025 income (CRA, how we calculate the CCB).
Missing benefit payment guides by program
Each program has its own quirks, so use the page that matches the payment you are missing:
- CCB payment not received: the 5-day rule and the checks specific to child benefits.
- CCB payments stopped or reduced: July income changes, a partner who did not file, custody changes.
- GST credit not received: the switch to the CGEB name, the $50 quarterly rule and the 10-day wait.
- CPP payment not deposited: bank posting times and Service Canada account changes.
- OAS payment late and OAS payments stopped: pension and GIS problems.
- CRA marital status change: how a new partner or a separation changes your payments.
- CRA direct deposit time: when a deposit shows in your bank on payment day.
Who do I contact about a CRA payment not received?
Contact the CRA for any benefit it pays, and Service Canada for CPP, OAS, GIS and the Canada Disability Benefit. Calling the wrong agency is a common delay: the CRA cannot see CPP payment records, and Service Canada cannot trace a CCB deposit.
| Benefit | Agency | Official contact |
|---|---|---|
| CCB, CGEB, ACWB, OTB, provincial child and sales tax credits | Canada Revenue Agency | Benefits line 1-800-387-1193, listed on the CRA benefit payment dates page |
| CPP retirement, disability and survivor benefits | Service Canada | 1-800-277-9914, listed on the Service Canada CPP contact page |
| OAS, GIS, Allowance | Service Canada | OAS contact page on canada.ca |
| Quebec Family Allowance, solidarity tax credit | Retraite Quebec, Revenu Quebec | Provincial agency websites |
The CRA benefits number is published on its benefit payment dates page. The CPP number, hours and an online callback request (answered within 2 business days) are on the Service Canada CPP contact page. Have your Social Insurance Number, the payment date and the amount you expected ready.
What happens after a missing payment is traced?
If a trace shows the payment was never issued, the agency fixes the cause and pays the missed amount with a later payment. The CRA says that once your information is updated and the benefit is recalculated, it resumes payments and sends amounts owed with your next scheduled payment (CRA, keep getting your CCB payments).
If a cheque was issued but lost, stolen or destroyed, a replacement is requested through the agency after the trace. Government of Canada cheques never expire, so an old uncashed cheque can still be deposited. If a payment turns out to have been too high, the rules on paying it back are covered in benefit overpayment.
Common questions
Why did I not receive my benefit payment today?
Most payments are issued on the scheduled date but can take a few days to arrive, especially cheques. Check your CRA or Service Canada account to confirm a payment was issued, then wait 5 working days for the CCB or 10 working days for other CRA benefits before calling.
Can I see if a CRA payment was sent?
Yes. The benefits and credits section of CRA My Account lists each payment with its date, amount and method. If nothing shows for the current month, the payment was not issued and you should look for a letter or notice in the account.
Do benefit payments come on weekends?
No. When a scheduled date falls on a weekend or statutory holiday, the payment is issued on the last business day before it, which is why the December 2026 CCB is paid on December 11.
Why did my payment go by cheque instead of direct deposit?
A payment is mailed when the agency has no valid bank account on file, for example after a bank account is closed or the deposit is rejected. Update your banking with the agency that pays the benefit so the next one is deposited.
Can my bank hold a government benefit deposit?
Government deposits are sent on the payment date, but each bank posts them on its own schedule, often overnight or early morning. If the agency confirms the payment was issued to the right account, ask your bank to look for it.
