CPP payment not deposited or late: what to check before you call Service Canada
Short answer
If your CPP payment was not deposited or looks late, check the date first: the remaining 2026 Canada Pension Plan payment dates are October 28, November 26 and December 22. Service Canada asks you to wait 5 to 10 business days before contacting it. A frequent cause is a bank account change that was given to the CRA or updated only for OAS.

Why is my CPP payment late or not deposited?
A CPP payment not deposited on payment day is usually either not due yet or sitting in a different account. Canada Pension Plan (CPP) benefits are paid once a month near the end of the month, not on a fixed day, and the Government of Canada says payments are issued on the listed dates but may take a few days to arrive, with mailed cheques slower than direct deposit (Government of Canada, benefits payment dates).
CPP is administered by Service Canada, part of Employment and Social Development Canada. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) collects CPP contributions from your pay but does not send your pension, so the CRA cannot see or trace a missing CPP deposit.

Check the CPP date for this month
The 2026 CPP dates move between the 22nd and the 29th, so a pension expected on the same day as last month can look late when it is not. CPP retirement, disability, survivor and children's benefits are all paid on the same day as Old Age Security.
| CPP payment date | After 5 business days | After 10 business days |
|---|---|---|
| Wednesday, October 28, 2026 | Thursday, November 5 | Friday, November 13 |
| Thursday, November 26, 2026 | Friday, December 4 | Friday, December 11 |
| Tuesday, December 22, 2026 | Later than usual: Christmas and Boxing Day holidays do not count | Early January 2027 |
The counts skip weekends and federal holidays, including Remembrance Day (November 11), Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The 2027 schedule has not been published yet; Service Canada usually posts the next year's calendar late in the year. See CPP payment dates for the full list.
Could my bank be the reason CPP is not received?
Yes. Service Canada releases the deposit on the payment date, but each bank or credit union posts incoming government deposits on its own schedule. Some show the money overnight and others later on payment day, so a deposit missing at 7 a.m. may simply not be posted yet.
If the deposit went to an account that is closed, the bank rejects it and the money returns to the government to be reissued. That round trip is why a closed account turns a same-day deposit into a much longer wait. The federal direct deposit instructions say to keep the old account open until a payment has arrived in the new one.
Did you change your bank account or address recently?
A recent account change is a frequent reason someone did not receive a CPP payment. Service Canada keeps its own direct deposit file for CPP, separate from the CRA's file for tax refunds and benefits such as the Canada Child Benefit. Telling the CRA about a new bank does not move your pension.
There is a second trap for people who receive both pensions. Old Age Security recipients can change their banking and address in My Service Canada Account, but CPP recipients cannot yet do this online and must request a callback, visit an office or call (Service Canada, change your personal information). If you updated your account online, your OAS may have moved while your CPP still went to the old account.

Changes also need lead time. The payment file is prepared before the deposit date, so an account change made a few days before payday may apply only from the following month. The options and timing are laid out in CPP direct deposit.
Other reasons a CPP payment did not arrive
- First payment after approval. A new pension starts with the month set in your approval letter, and the first deposit can include retroactive months. Check the letter for the start month before treating a first payment as late; retroactive rules are on CPP retroactive payments.
- Cheque recipients. A mailed cheque can take several extra days, and a change of address that has not reached Service Canada sends it to the old address.
- Unanswered Service Canada letter. A request for information or documents that goes unanswered should be dealt with before anything else. Check My Service Canada Account and your mail for requests you have not answered.
- Wrong amount rather than no payment. CPP rose 2.0% in January 2026, and income tax withheld at source reduces the deposit. A smaller deposit is not a missing one.
Who do I call if my CPP has not been deposited?
Contact Service Canada's CPP program, using the phone numbers and hours listed on the official Service Canada CPP contact page. You can also submit an eServiceCanada request online and receive a callback within 2 business days, which avoids the phone queue.
- Wait at least 5 business days after the payment date.
- Sign in to My Service Canada Account and note the last payment issued, its date and amount.
- Ask your bank whether a government deposit was received and returned.
- Have your Social Insurance Number, the bank transit, institution and account numbers you expect the deposit in, and your current mailing address ready.
- Call the CPP line or request a callback, and ask for a payment trace if the payment was issued.
If your OAS or GIS also failed to arrive, the same call can cover both, but check OAS payment late first. CRA benefits missing in the same month, such as the CGEB, need a separate call to the CRA; see GST credit not received and the missing benefit payment checklist.
Common questions
What time does CPP get deposited?
Service Canada releases CPP on the payment date, and the time it appears depends on your bank's posting schedule. Many banks show it overnight or early on payment day; if it is not there by the end of the day, check again the next business day before worrying.
Why did my OAS arrive but not my CPP?
OAS and CPP use separate payment files at Service Canada. If you changed banks online, only OAS can be updated in My Service Canada Account, so the CPP deposit may have gone to the old account.
Is the CPP payment date the same every month?
No. In 2026 it falls between the 22nd and the 29th, for example September 25, October 28 and November 26, with December 22 paid early before the holidays.
Can I call the CRA about a missing CPP payment?
No. The CRA does not pay CPP benefits and cannot trace them. Contact Service Canada's CPP program instead.
Will I get the missed CPP payment back?
Yes, if you were entitled to it. A returned or lost payment is reissued once Service Canada has a valid account or address, and missed months are paid when the cause is fixed.
