CCB payment not received: what to check before you call the CRA

Short answer

If your CCB payment was not received on the payment date, wait 5 working days before contacting the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). For the October 20, 2026 Canada Child Benefit payment, that means calling from October 28. Meanwhile, check CRA My Account for the payment record, an unanswered letter, or an outdated address or bank account.

Why was my CCB payment not received this month?

A CCB payment not received on the 20th is most often a delay on the bank or mail side, and the CRA will not trace it until 5 working days have passed (CRA, CCB payment dates). If the payment is still missing after that, the cause is usually on your CRA file: a letter you have not answered, an old address, a closed bank account, or a return that has not been assessed.

The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is a tax-free monthly payment from the CRA to eligible families with children under 18. It is paid on the 20th of each month, or on the last business day before the 20th when that day is a weekend or holiday, and in December it comes early.

The 5-day rule: how long to wait for a late CCB payment

Count 5 working days after the payment date, skipping weekends and statutory holidays, and call on the next working day if nothing has arrived. The CRA applies this shorter window only to the CCB and the Alberta Child and Family Benefit; its other benefits have a 10 working day wait.

How to check your CCB status in My Account

CRA My Account shows whether a CCB payment was issued, for how much, and whether it went to your bank or by cheque. Work through it in this order:

Missing CCB: what to check in order
Missing CCB: what to check in order
  1. Open Benefits and credits and look for this month's CCB line. No entry means the CRA did not issue a payment, so the problem is on your file, not with your bank.
  2. If a payment shows as direct deposit, compare the last digits of the account with the one you use today. A deposit to a closed account is returned to the government and later reissued, which takes extra time.
  3. If it shows as a cheque, confirm the mailing address. The CRA warns that if you move and do not update your address, payments may stop even if you use direct deposit.
  4. Open the Mail section. A letter asking for proof of the child's residence or your relationship to the child must be answered before payments resume.
  5. Look for a new notice of redetermination. It shows the new monthly amount after any change, including a change to zero.

Common reasons the CCB did not arrive

A return was not filed or not yet assessed

Both you and your spouse or common-law partner must file a return every year, even with no income, to keep receiving the CCB (CRA, T4114 Canada child benefits). The CRA asks families to file by April 30; a late 2025 return is the usual reason the July 2026 payment did not come.

Your annual amount was paid in July

If your yearly CCB is under $240, the CRA pays it as one lump sum with the July payment and nothing arrives in the other months. Families with higher incomes near the top of the phase-out often fall into this group without realizing it.

A new child or a new application is still being processed

Payments for a newborn or a newly arrived child start only after the application is approved, and the first deposit then includes any months owed. Missing money for a child you added recently is not a lost payment; see CCB retroactive payments for how back pay is calculated.

Your child turned 18 or custody changed

The CCB covers children under 18, so payments for a child end once they turn 18. A custody change, including a move to shared custody where each parent gets half, changes who is paid and how much.

What if my CCB is late in a holiday month?

Holiday months move the payment earlier, not later. The December 2026 CCB is issued on Friday, December 11, well before the 20th, and a CCB that falls on a weekend is paid the Friday before, as happened on September 18, 2026. If you are watching the account on the 20th, you may have missed a deposit that already arrived.

Bank posting times also vary. Some banks show government deposits overnight, others later on payment day; the details are in CRA direct deposit time.

Contacting the CRA about a CCB payment not received

After the 5 working days, contact the CRA benefits line listed on its benefit payment dates page. Have your Social Insurance Number, the child's name and date of birth, the payment date and the amount you expected ready, along with your latest notice of assessment.

If the payment stopped because of a larger issue, such as income, a partner's unfiled return or a marital status change, read CCB payments stopped or reduced. Other benefits missing in the same month are covered in the missing benefit payment hub, and a later demand to repay CCB is explained in benefit overpayment.

Common questions

Why didn't I get my CCB on the 20th?

The 20th is only the usual date. If it falls on a weekend the CCB is paid the Friday before, and in December 2026 it is paid on December 11. If the date is right and nothing arrived, wait 5 working days, then check My Account.

Did the CCB come out today?

The October 2026 CCB was issued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. In September it came early, on Friday, September 18, because the 20th was a Sunday. The next payments are November 20 and December 11, 2026.

Can I get my missed CCB payments back?

Yes, if you were entitled to them. Once the CRA fixes the cause, such as a late return or an old address, it recalculates the benefit and pays the amounts owed with your next scheduled payment.

Why is my CCB still processing after I had a baby?

The CCB for a new child starts only after the application is approved. Payments are then issued with any retroactive amount from the month after the birth, provided you were eligible.

Does the CRA send a cheque if my CCB deposit bounces?

A deposit sent to a closed account is returned and has to be reissued, which adds time. Update your bank details in My Account so the reissued payment and future ones reach the right account.
