Did not receive your GST credit in October 2026? What changed and what to check
Short answer
If you did not receive your GST credit on October 5, 2026, note that it is now paid as the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB), which replaced the GST/HST credit in July 2026. The 2026 payments were January 5, April 2, July 3 and October 5; the next is January 5, 2027. Allow 10 working days: October 21 is the earliest day to report the October payment missing. Common causes are an unfiled 2025 return, a small amount paid in July, or a debt offset.

Why did I not receive my GST credit?
Many people who did not receive a GST credit in July 2026 were in fact paid, under a new name. The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) replaced the GST/HST credit in July 2026 with the same eligibility rules and calculation, and 25% higher amounts (CRA, CGEB). Bank statements and CRA My Account now show the CGEB label, not GST/HST credit.
If no CGEB payment appears either, the reason is usually one of five things: no 2025 tax return on file, a quarterly amount so small it was all paid in July, a payment kept to cover a debt, an out-of-date address or bank account, or income that is now above the cut-off. Each has a different fix, covered below.
GST/HST credit or CGEB: what you are actually waiting for
The GST/HST credit was the tax-free quarterly payment to low and modest income households that offsets sales tax. The CRA's old GST/HST credit page is now marked as no longer available and sends visitors to the CGEB pages, so searches for a GST cheque and a CGEB payment point to the same money.
| Payment date | Name on the payment | Based on |
|---|---|---|
| January 5, 2026 | GST/HST credit | 2024 tax return |
| April 2, 2026 | GST/HST credit | 2024 tax return |
| June 5, 2026 | One-time CGEB top-up | 2024 tax return |
| July 3, 2026 | CGEB | 2025 tax return |
| October 5, 2026 | CGEB | 2025 tax return |
| January 5, 2027 | CGEB | 2025 tax return |
The CRA's CGEB guide says quarterly payments fall on the 5th of July, October, January and April, moved to the business day before when the 5th is a weekend or federal holiday (CRA, RC4210). The guide sets the next payment for Tuesday, January 5, 2027, although the CRA payment calendar had not yet listed it as of October 20, 2026; see CGEB payment dates for updates.
How long to wait when the GST credit is not received
Wait 10 working days after the scheduled date before contacting the CRA about a missing CGEB payment. That is twice the 5-day window the CRA uses for the Canada Child Benefit, so a CGEB that has not shown up by the end of payment week is not yet considered missing.
For the October 5, 2026 payment, the count skips weekends and Thanksgiving Monday, October 12. The tenth working day is Tuesday, October 20, so the earliest day to report the payment as missing is Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
Common causes of a GST HST credit not received

No 2025 tax return, or no return from your spouse
The CGEB is assessed from your tax return; there is no separate application for most people. Payments from July 2026 to June 2027 use your 2025 return, and if you have a spouse or common-law partner, both returns are needed because the CRA combines your incomes into adjusted family net income. A missing 2025 return, even with zero income, means no July or October payment.
Your annual amount was paid all at once in July
When the calculated CGEB is under $50 a quarter, the CRA pays the full year in the July payment. Someone entitled to $180 for July 2026 to June 2027 would have received the whole $180 on July 3, 2026 and nothing on October 5. This happens most often when income sits near the top of the phase-out range.
The payment was kept to pay a debt
If you owe an overpayment of benefits, the CRA says it keeps future CGEB payments or tax refunds until the balance is repaid, and it can also apply CGEB amounts to tax debts and some other government debts. You should receive a notice explaining the amount applied. Details on repayment are in benefit overpayment.
You turned 19, or you are new to Canada
A person who turns 19 is first paid in the quarter after the birthday, not before, and only if they have filed a return. Newcomers must apply with Form RC151, Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit Application for Individuals Who Become Residents of Canada, or with Form RC66 if they are also registering children for the CCB.
Your household changed
A marriage, a new common-law partner or a separation changes the CGEB from the next quarter. Only one spouse receives the payment for the couple, usually the one whose return was assessed first, so a payment that moved to your partner's account is not missing. The rules are in CRA marital status change.
What to do if you did not receive your GST payment
- Sign in to CRA My Account and open Benefits and credits. Look for a CGEB line for the current quarter, not a GST/HST credit line.
- If a payment shows, note whether it was a cheque or direct deposit and check the address or account number it went to.
- If no payment shows, open your notices. The CGEB notice issued in July states your amount for July 2026 to June 2027, including a zero amount and the reason.
- If your 2025 return, or your partner's, has not been filed, file it. The CRA recalculates and pays amounts owed with a later scheduled payment.
- Update your address, bank account or marital status online if any of them are out of date.
- After 10 working days, contact the CRA using the benefits line listed on its benefit payment dates page.
Provincial credits paid with the CGEB, such as the Saskatchewan Low-Income Tax Credit and the Nova Scotia Affordable Living Tax Credit, follow the same schedule, so they usually go missing together. If other payments are also absent this month, start from the benefit payment not received hub. For pension payments, see CPP payment not deposited or OAS payment late.
Common questions
Is there still a GST credit payment in October 2026?
Yes, but it is paid as the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit. The October payment was issued on October 5, 2026 to people who qualified based on their 2025 tax return, and the next payment is January 5, 2027.
Why did I get the GST credit in April but not in July?
The April 2026 payment was based on your 2024 return, while July 2026 onward uses your 2025 return. A 2025 return that was not filed or showed higher family income can stop or reduce the July and October payments.
Do I need to apply for the CGEB if I got the GST/HST credit?
No. The CRA considers you automatically when you file your return. Only new residents need to apply, using Form RC151.
Can the CRA take my GST credit for a debt?
Yes. The CRA can keep CGEB payments to recover a benefit overpayment and can apply them to tax debts and some other government debts, and it sends a notice when it does.
I am single and got nothing in October. Could I have been paid already?
Yes. If your quarterly amount was under $50, the CRA paid the whole year's CGEB in July 2026, so no October payment is due.
