OAS increase at 75: when the extra 10% starts and what it is worth
Short answer
The OAS increase at 75 is a permanent 10% raise to your Old Age Security pension that starts automatically the month after your 75th birthday. You do not apply. For October to December 2026, it lifts the maximum from $762.50 to $838.75 a month, worth $76.25 more each month. The GIS is not affected.

What changes when you turn 75
Old Age Security pays a higher rate to seniors aged 75 and over. The OAS increase at 75 was made permanent in July 2022, when the pension for this age group rose by 10%. Since then, anyone reaching 75 moves into the higher rate on their own schedule.

The increase is 10% of the OAS pension you personally receive. If you have a partial pension because you lived in Canada for fewer than 40 years after 18, your raise is 10% of that partial amount. Someone receiving 30/40 of the full pension, about $571.88 at the October 2026 rate, would see about $57.19 more a month, by our calculation.
When the 10% increase starts
The higher rate applies from the month after your 75th birthday. Because OAS is paid near the end of each month, the first larger deposit arrives late in that following month.
| 75th birthday | First month at the higher rate | First higher deposit |
|---|---|---|
| September 3, 2026 | October 2026 | October 28, 2026 |
| October 30, 2026 | November 2026 | November 26, 2026 |
| November 12, 2026 | December 2026 | December 22, 2026 |
| December 5, 2026 | January 2027 | January 2027 date not yet announced |
A birthday on the first or the last day of a month makes no difference; the increase still starts the following month. The remaining 2026 deposit days are listed on our OAS payment dates page.
Max OAS at 75 in 2026
For October to December 2026, the maximum OAS amount at 75 and over is $838.75 a month, compared with $762.50 for ages 65 to 74. That gap of $76.25 a month adds up to about $915 over a year at current rates.
| Quarter | Age 65 to 74 | Age 75 and over | Monthly difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| January to March 2026 | $742.31 | $816.54 | $74.23 |
| April to June 2026 | $743.05 | $817.36 | $74.31 |
| July to September 2026 | $751.97 | $827.17 | $75.20 |
| October to December 2026 | $762.50 | $838.75 | $76.25 |
Both rates rise together at each quarterly review, so the gap grows slightly over time. The OAS increase page explains the quarterly indexation that sits on top of the 75+ rate.
Does GIS go up at 75?
No. Service Canada states that the 10% increase at 75 does not affect the amount of your Guaranteed Income Supplement. The GIS maximum is $1,138.90 for a single person whether you are 66 or 86.
Because GIS does not count the OAS pension as income, the larger OAS payment also does not reduce your GIS. Your combined maximum as a single senior rises from $1,901.40 to $1,977.65 a month in October to December 2026. See the GIS amount page for couple rates.
The clawback threshold at 75
The recovery tax starts at the same income for everyone: $93,454 of 2025 net world income for deductions from July 2026 to June 2027. What differs is where the pension runs out. Because the 75+ pension is larger, it takes more income for the 15% repayment to recover all of it.
| Income year | Clawback starts | Full recovery, 65 to 74 | Full recovery, 75+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $93,454 | $152,062 | $157,923 |
| 2026 | $95,323 | $155,320 | $161,320 |
Note that the higher pension also means a larger amount counts in your net world income, which includes OAS itself. The OAS clawback guide works through examples.
If you deferred OAS or are still deciding
The deferral increase and the 75 increase are separate rules. Deferral adds 0.6% for each month you delay after 65, up to 36% at 70, and the 10% raise arrives at 75 regardless of when you started. For how the two interact on your own record, use the Old Age Security Benefits Estimator on canada.ca, which models different start ages.
Deferring past 70 gains nothing, since the deferral increase stops at 70. Our OAS deferral page covers the trade-offs.
What to do if the increase is missing
- Wait for the deposit in the month after your birthday month; the change never appears in the birthday month itself.
- Compare the gross amount, before tax or recovery tax deductions, with the 75+ rate for that quarter.
- Confirm that Service Canada has your correct date of birth; an error there would delay the change.
- If a recovery tax deduction started in July at the same time, it can hide the increase. Your letter from Service Canada shows the deduction.
- If the gross amount still has not changed, contact Service Canada through the Old Age Security contact page on canada.ca.

How much is OAS at age 75 in 2026?
