What is GIS in Canada for seniors, in one paragraph
The Guaranteed Income Supplement is the part of the Old Age Security program aimed at seniors with the least income. It is paid on top of the OAS pension, in the same deposit, and it rises or falls with your income from the previous year. It is not a loan and it is not taxed.
OAS goes to almost everyone 65 and over who meets the residence rules. GIS goes only to OAS pensioners whose other income is low. That is the key difference between the two, and it is why two neighbours with the same OAS can get very different total payments.
How much is the GIS payment
The answer to "what is GIS payment" depends on your marital status and your partner's benefits. The table shows the October to December 2026 maximums; actual payments are lower for anyone with income above zero.
| Your situation | Maximum GIS a month | Income must be under |
|---|---|---|
| Single, widowed or divorced | $1,138.90 | $23,112 |
| Partner receives full OAS | $685.56 | $30,528 combined |
| Partner receives the Allowance | $685.56 | $42,768 combined |
| Partner receives no OAS | $1,138.90 | $55,392 combined |
The maximums are reviewed for the cost of living in January, April, July and October. Your personal amount is recalculated every July from your latest tax return. The GIS amount page tracks each quarter's figures.
Who qualifies for the guaranteed income supplement

Sponsored immigrants are the group most often surprised by the rules. You cannot get GIS while a sponsorship agreement is in effect, unless your sponsor has died, has been in prison for more than 6 months, was convicted of an offence against you, or has declared bankruptcy. Since October 1, 2025, parent and grandparent sponsorship agreements run for 20 years rather than 10.
Income is what knocks most people out. OAS itself is ignored, but CPP, workplace pensions, RRIF withdrawals and most other income count. The GIS clawback page shows how each type of income is treated and the exemption for work earnings.
Is GIS automatic?
For most people, yes. If Service Canada has enough information, it sends a letter shortly after your 64th birthday confirming your OAS enrolment and saying it will try to enrol you for GIS automatically.
When you need to apply yourself
- If a month has passed since your 64th birthday and no enrolment letter has arrived, contact Service Canada to find out whether you must apply.
- If you are applying for OAS and GIS together, use form ISP-3550 or apply online in My Service Canada Account.
- If you already get OAS and only need GIS, use form ISP-3025, Application for the Guaranteed Income Supplement.
- Have your Social Insurance Number, your partner's details and your banking information ready.
Do I need to file taxes to get GIS?
Yes. GIS is renewed each year using your tax return, and if you are part of a couple, your partner's return too. Not filing your 2025 return can stop or reduce your GIS from July 2026, even if your income has not changed at all.
Also tell Service Canada about a marriage, a new common-law relationship, a separation or a partner's death. Each of these changes which row of the table above applies to you.
GIS and moving abroad
GIS is paid only to people living in Canada. If you leave for more than 6 months, the supplement stops, even if your OAS pension can continue abroad. Call Service Canada before you go so you are not overpaid, and again when you return so payments can restart. OAS outside Canada covers the pension side of a move.
When GIS is paid
GIS arrives with your OAS on the same day each month. The remaining 2026 dates are October 28, November 26 and December 22. The full schedule, including what is known about 2027, is on our OAS payment dates page. People aged 60 to 64 who have lost a spouse may qualify for a related benefit, the Allowance for the Survivor.
Common questions
What is the difference between OAS and GIS?
OAS is a pension for nearly everyone 65 and over who meets the residence rules. GIS is an extra, income-tested payment for OAS pensioners with low income.
Is GIS automatic in Canada?
Usually. Service Canada tries to enrol eligible people automatically and sends a letter after the 64th birthday. If no letter arrives within a month, you may need to apply.
Is GIS taxable?
No. GIS is a tax-free payment. It appears on your T4A(OAS) slip and your return, but it is deducted so no tax is charged on it.
Can I get GIS if I was sponsored to come to Canada?
Not while the sponsorship agreement is in effect, except in specific cases such as the sponsor's death, bankruptcy or imprisonment for more than 6 months.
Why did my GIS stop in July?
A frequent reason is that your tax return, or your partner's, was not filed or processed in time for the July renewal. File as soon as possible and contact Service Canada.
