Canada Disability Benefit back pay: how far back it goes and how it is paid
Short answer
Yes, the Canada Disability Benefit gives back pay: up to 24 months before Service Canada receives your application, but no month earlier than June 2025, when the program began. The back pay arrives as part of your first deposit, on the third Thursday of the month after you are approved. Applications received by about June 2027 can still reach back to June 2025.

Can I get Canada Disability Benefit back pay?
Yes. Canada.ca says you may receive back payments for up to 24 months from the date Service Canada gets your application, provided you were eligible in those months, and not for any month before June 2025. You do not have to ask separately; the back months are assessed as part of your application.
Back pay in this program means benefit for months when you already met the rules but had not yet applied or been approved. Common reasons for a gap are waiting for a Disability Tax Credit decision, not knowing about the CDB, or a late tax return.
How far back does CDB back pay go? The 24-month rule and the June 2025 floor
Two limits apply, and whichever is later wins. The first is 24 months before Service Canada receives your application. The second is June 2025, the Canada Disability Benefit start date, because the program did not exist earlier.
Until mid-2027, the June 2025 floor is the limit that bites. After that, the 24-month window starts to cut off the earliest months, so each month of delay loses a month of benefit.
| Application received | 24 months earlier | Earliest month you could be paid |
|---|---|---|
| October 2026 | About October 2024 | June 2025 (program start) |
| March 2027 | About March 2025 | June 2025 (program start) |
| June 2027 | About June 2025 | About June 2025 |
| December 2027 | About December 2025 | About December 2025 |
| June 2028 | About June 2026 | About June 2026 |
The months are approximate because Service Canada decides the exact first month on each file. The point for planning is simple: once the DTC is approved, submit the CDB application right away.
How CDB retroactive payments are paid
Back pay comes as a lump sum with your first regular payment. Canada.ca says that first payment is issued on the third Thursday of the month after approval and includes any back payments that apply. From then on, you receive the normal monthly amount on the regular CDB payment dates. Service Canada aims to send its decision letter within 28 calendar days of receiving your application, or 49 days when a legal representative applies for you.
Each back month is paid at the rate for its own benefit year. Months from June 2025 to June 2026 use the $200 maximum and income from your 2024 return. Months from July 2026 onward use the $204.20 maximum and your 2025 return. If your income was higher in one year, the back pay for that year can be smaller.

Example: a large first deposit
Illustration only, assuming full benefit in every month: a single person eligible since the program began applies in September 2026 and is approved in October 2026. The first deposit on November 19, 2026 could cover June 2025 to June 2026 at $200 (13 months, $2,600) and July to October 2026 at $204.20 (4 months, $816.80), for $3,416.80, plus the regular November benefit. Service Canada's letter will show the months and amounts it actually used.
Back pay if you are turning 18 or already 65
Age limits change the window. The Canada Disability Benefit is for people aged 18 to 64, so back pay can only cover months inside that age range.
- Turning 18: you can apply up to 6 months before your 18th birthday, and processing starts when you turn 18. Applying early is the way to avoid losing months, since there are no payments for months before age 18.
- Already 65: Canada.ca says people aged 65 or older can still get back payments for up to 24 months from the application date, up to the month they turned 65. Someone who turned 65 in early 2026 and never applied should apply now.
What can reduce or delay back pay
- A missing tax return. You and your spouse or partner need to have filed; file any missing years before or with your application.
- No DTC for the period. The CDB requires an approved Disability Tax Credit. Check the period covered on your DTC notice.
- Incarceration. Months spent serving two years or more in a federal penitentiary are not payable, apart from the first and last month.
- Income above the thresholds. A back month is only worth what that period's income allows; see the CDB amount examples.
- A late appeal. If you disagree with the months awarded, send form CDB0006 within 180 days of the decision letter.
Once you are approved for the DTC, the CDB eligibility guide covers the application itself.
Is CDB back pay the same as disability tax credit back pay?
No, and searches for disability back pay often mix the two up. The Disability Tax Credit is a tax credit run by the CRA. Once it is approved, you may be able to claim it for up to 10 past years: tick the box on the DTC application asking the CRA to adjust your earlier returns, or later ask the CRA in writing or adjust the returns yourself online. That can produce a tax refund. CDB back pay is a separate monthly benefit from Service Canada, limited to 24 months before your application and to months from June 2025.
| Question | Canada Disability Benefit | Disability Tax Credit |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | Service Canada (ESDC) | Canada Revenue Agency |
| What you get back | The monthly benefit for past months | A tax credit on past returns, which can mean a refund |
| How far back | 24 months before your application, never before June 2025 | Up to 10 years |
| How to get it | Assessed with your CDB application | Tick the adjustment box on the DTC application, or ask the CRA in writing or adjust returns online |
Is CDB back pay taxable, and does it include the $150?
No tax is owed on CDB back pay. Canada.ca says CDB payments are not taxable and no tax slip is issued, so a large lump sum does not need to be spread over past returns the way a taxable retroactive payment might. The is the CDB taxable page covers provincial assistance, which may treat a lump sum differently.
The one-time $150 supplemental payment is separate from back pay. The first round, paid from September 17, 2026, went to people who received a CDB payment between July 2025 and June 2026. ESDC's next round, in winter 2027, covers people who became eligible since July 2026 or were re-certified for the DTC; ESDC has not said which group late applicants whose back pay reaches into 2025 fall into. For the program overview, see the Canada Disability Benefit hub.
Common questions
Is the Canada Disability Benefit retroactive to June 2025?
Yes, for people who were eligible then and whose application reaches Service Canada within 24 months. June 2025 is the earliest month that can ever be paid.
When does Canada Disability Benefit back pay stop reaching June 2025?
Around mid-2027. After about June 2027, the 24-month look-back falls after June 2025, so later applicants lose the earliest months.
How will I receive my CDB back pay?
As part of your first payment, issued on the third Thursday of the month after you are approved, by direct deposit or cheque.
Can I get CDB back pay if my DTC took a year to approve?
Yes, as long as you apply within the 24-month window and were eligible in those months. Apply for the CDB as soon as the DTC approval arrives.
Why is my CDB back pay less than 24 months of benefit?
Usually because the program only started in June 2025, because your income reduced some months, or because some months fell outside the age or DTC periods.
Does CDB back pay go back more than two years?
No. The most the CDB pays is 24 months, or two years, before Service Canada receives your application, and never for a month before June 2025. Months of eligibility earlier than that are lost, which is why applying soon after DTC approval matters.
