What is GAINS?

The Ontario Guaranteed Annual Income System (GAINS) is a monthly Ontario payment that tops up the federal Old Age Security (OAS) pension and Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) for seniors with very little other income. It is an Ontario program, funded by the province, and it builds on the federal system: only people already receiving the GIS can get it.

GAINS is separate from the Ontario Trillium Benefit. A low-income senior who rents can receive both: the Ontario Trillium Benefit near the 10th and GAINS near the 25th.

When are the GAINS payment dates in 2026?

Ontario says GAINS payments are issued on or about the 25th day of each month, starting in July and ending in June. Ontario does not publish a separate day-by-day GAINS calendar, so the 25th is the reference date for every month.

In the rest of 2026, the 25th falls on a Sunday in October and on Christmas Day in December. On those months the deposit may land on a nearby business day; check your bank account and allow a few business days before treating a payment as missing.

How does the GAINS payment schedule line up with OAS and GIS?

GAINS and the federal pensions arrive in the same part of the month. Service Canada pays OAS and GIS in the last week, while GAINS targets the 25th, so most months the two are a few days apart.

How much is GAINS?

For the 2026 benefit year, eligible seniors can receive up to $92 a month through GAINS, which is up to $1,104 over 12 months. The payment is non-taxable, so you do not report it as income on your tax return.

Ontario sets the amount using rate tables based on your age, marital status and private income. Private income is money other than OAS and GIS: CPP, a workplace pension, bank interest and similar amounts. To qualify, it can be no more than $4,416 a year for a single senior or $8,832 for a senior couple.

Example: a widowed senior in Hamilton

Joan is 78, lives alone and receives OAS and the GIS. Her only other income is a CPP survivor's pension of $300 a month, or $3,600 a year. That is below the $4,416 single limit, so she falls within GAINS. Her exact payment comes from Ontario's rate table and can be anywhere up to the $92 monthly maximum.

Who qualifies for the Ontario Guaranteed Annual Income System?

You can get GAINS if you meet all four of Ontario's conditions:

  1. You are 65 or older.
  2. You have been a resident of Canada for 10 years or more.
  3. You have lived in Ontario for the past 12 months, or for a total of 20 years since turning 18.
  4. You receive the federal OAS pension and the GIS, and your private income is within the $4,416 or $8,832 limit.

Because the GIS is the gateway, anyone who is not yet getting the GIS should start there. The what is GIS guide explains how the federal supplement works and who is automatically enrolled.

Is GAINS automatic?

Yes, if you already receive OAS and the GIS: Ontario states that you do not have to apply. If you are not yet receiving them, you become eligible by filing your income tax return every year by April 30, even with no income, or by completing a GIS application.

  • Keep filing every year. A missed return can stop the GIS, and GAINS stops with it.
  • Sign up for direct deposit through Service Canada, which Ontario names as the route for GAINS deposits.
  • If you move out of Ontario, you no longer meet the residence rule; tell Service Canada and Ontario's Ministry of Finance.
  • Northern Ontario seniors can add the Northern Ontario energy credit through their OTB.

All Ontario and federal deposit days are collected on the Ontario benefit payment dates page.

Common questions

What day is GAINS paid in Ontario?

On or about the 25th of each month. Ontario does not post a different date for each month, so expect the deposit around the 25th and allow for weekends and holidays.

Is GAINS paid with the OAS deposit?

Ontario gives GAINS its own timing, on or about the 25th, while OAS and GIS follow Service Canada's schedule, which in 2026 runs from the 22nd to the 29th. Check your bank statement to see how the payments appear in your account.

How much is GAINS per month in 2026?

Up to $92 a month for the benefit year from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. The exact amount depends on your private income, age and marital status.

Why did my GAINS payment stop?

The most common reasons are a missing tax return, a GIS that stopped or was reduced, private income above $4,416 (single) or $8,832 (couple), or a move out of Ontario.

Do I have to report GAINS on my tax return?

No. Ontario describes GAINS as a non-taxable payment.
