CPP increase 2027: how the January rate is set and when you will know

Short answer

The CPP increase for 2027 has not been announced. It will equal the change in the Consumer Price Index averaged over November 2025 to October 2026, compared with the previous 12 months, and it takes effect with the January 2027 payment. For reference, CPP rose 2.0% in January 2026. CPP amounts never go down when prices fall.

CPP increase 2027: the short answer

No official CPP increase for 2027 exists yet. The rate cannot be calculated until Statistics Canada publishes the October 2026 Consumer Price Index, which closes the 12-month measuring window. Service Canada then posts the new amounts, and they apply from the January 2027 payment.

What is certain is the method. CPP benefits are indexed once a year to the CPI All-Items Index, and the result is never negative. If prices had fallen, benefits would simply stay where they are until the index rose again.

How the 2026 CPP increase of 2.0% was calculated

The January 2026 adjustment is the clearest example of the formula. Service Canada took the average CPI for November 2024 to October 2025 and compared it with the average for November 2023 to October 2024.

Average CPI, November 2023 to October 2024160.4
Change (163.6 divided by 160.4, minus 1)2.0%

Because the calculation uses 12-month averages rather than one month's inflation rate, a sudden jump or drop in prices late in the year moves the result only a little. That is why the CPP increase often differs from the headline inflation number reported in the news that month.

How the January 2027 CPP rate will be set

The same steps apply for the next adjustment. Each one depends on a CPI release, so the timing is predictable even though the number is not.

How the January 2027 CPP increase is set
How the January 2027 CPP increase is set
  1. Statistics Canada publishes monthly CPI figures through 2026.
  2. The October 2026 CPI, released in November, completes the November 2025 to October 2026 window.
  3. Service Canada averages those 12 months and compares the result with the November 2024 to October 2025 average of 163.6.
  4. The percentage change becomes the CPP increase for 2027, and it is applied to all CPP benefits in pay.
  5. The first higher payment arrives with the January 2027 CPP deposit, near the end of that month.

When are the 2027 CPP rates published?

Two separate sets of numbers come out in late autumn and winter. They answer different questions, so it helps to know which one you are waiting for.

Last year's CPI page on canada.ca was updated on December 30, 2025, just before the new amounts took effect. For 2026, the contribution ceilings were $74,600 (YMPE) and $85,000 (YAMPE).

Estimating your 2027 CPP amount (labelled projection)

Until the official rate is out, the most honest approach is to test a few rates against your own pension. The table below is an illustration, not a forecast. Method: take the 2026 monthly amount and multiply it by one plus the assumed rate.

Illustration only: 2026 amounts under assumed January 2027 increases
2026 monthly amountIf the increase is 1.5%If 2.0%If 2.5%
$877.01 (average new pension at 65)$890.17$894.55$898.94
$1,234.68 (average disability benefit)$1,253.20$1,259.37$1,265.55
$549.62 (average survivor under 65)$557.86$560.61$563.36

As a rule of thumb, every 1% of indexation adds about $8.77 a month to an $877.01 pension. Once the real rate is published, multiply your December 2026 payment before tax by one plus that rate to see your January figure.

Why the CPP maximum 2027 is not just the 2026 maximum plus inflation

Indexation lifts pensions already in pay. The maximum for someone starting a new pension in 2027 also depends on the earnings ceilings and on the CPP enhancement, which is gradually raising pensions for people who contributed after 2019.

Service Canada notes that the maximum amounts change every month because of the enhancement. So the CPP maximum 2027 figure for new retirees cannot be found by adding the indexation rate to the 2026 maximum of $1,507.65. Wait for the official number rather than trusting a calculated one.

For today's full list of amounts, see how much CPP is per month. For disability recipients, the CPP disability amount page breaks down the flat-rate and earnings-based parts, both of which are indexed.

Do you need to do anything to get the increase?

No. The January increase is automatic for every CPP benefit, including retirement, disability, survivor and children's benefits. There is no form to file and no need to call Service Canada.

  • Check your January 2027 deposit against December 2026. The gross amount should rise by the announced rate, although rounding can shift it by a cent.
  • If you have tax withheld at a fixed dollar amount, your net deposit rises slightly more than you might expect, because the tax amount does not change.
  • Watch the date: January deposits follow the CPP payment dates schedule, and the 2027 calendar is not yet posted.
  • Disability recipients receive the same indexation on the same day, as shown on our CPP disability payment dates page.

Common questions

How much will CPP increase in 2027?

It is not yet known. The rate will equal the change in average CPI from November 2025 to October 2026 compared with the prior 12 months, and it is usually published late in the year.

Does CPP go up every year?

CPP is reviewed every January. It rises when the CPI average has increased. If the CPI average falls, CPP stays the same rather than dropping.

What was the CPP increase in 2026?

CPP benefits rose 2.0% in January 2026, based on average CPI of 163.6 for November 2024 to October 2025 against 160.4 a year earlier.

Is the CPP increase applied to survivor and disability benefits?

Yes. Indexation applies to all CPP benefits in pay, including disability, survivor's and children's benefits.

When will the January 2027 CPP benefit increase show up?

In your January 2027 CPP payment. The increase is applied automatically to the January deposit, which Service Canada pays near the end of January; the exact January 2027 payment date is not yet posted.

Why is my CPP increase smaller than inflation in the news?

News reports usually quote one month's year-over-year change. CPP uses a 12-month average ending in October, which smooths out recent swings.
