How much is CPP disability per month in 2026?

The CPP disability benefit pays a maximum of $1,741.20 a month in 2026. Most people get less. Service Canada reports that people who began receiving the benefit recently average $1,234.68 a month, according to its CPP payment amounts table.

At the maximum, a full year of payments comes to $20,894.40 before tax. At the average, the yearly total is $14,816.16. The gap between those two figures comes almost entirely from the contribution-based part of the benefit, which is explained below.

How the CPP disability benefit amount is calculated

Every CPP disability payment has two parts. The first is a fixed amount of $610.46 a month in 2026 that everyone who qualifies receives, no matter what they earned. The second is a variable amount based on how much you contributed to the CPP and for how many years.

Because the variable part follows your earnings record, two people with the same condition can receive very different payments. Someone who earned near the yearly maximum ($74,600 in 2026) for most of their career will be much closer to $1,741.20 than someone with part-time or interrupted earnings.

What does not change the amount

  • Your household income or savings. The CPP disability benefit is not income-tested.
  • Private long-term disability insurance. Service Canada says you can still qualify while receiving disability income from other sources, although your insurer may reduce its own payment.
  • The province you live in, outside Quebec. Quebec residents are covered by the Quebec Pension Plan instead.

How the amount rises each year

CPP disability payments are indexed every January to the cost of living and never go down if prices fall. The January 2026 increase was 2.0%. The January 2027 rate and the 2027 maximum are not yet announced; Service Canada usually publishes them in late autumn or December. See CPP increase for how the rate is set.

What is the maximum CPP disability payment with other benefits

If you receive the disability benefit together with a CPP survivor's pension, Service Canada pays both as one combined monthly deposit. That combination is capped at $1,756.14 a month in 2026, so adding a survivor's pension raises the total only slightly. Details on the survivor side are on our CPP survivor benefit page.

The federal Canada Disability Benefit is a separate, income-tested program with its own payment dates. Your CPP disability payment counts as income when that benefit is calculated. See the Canada Disability Benefit guide.

Post-retirement disability benefit amount

If you already started your CPP retirement pension early and then became disabled before 65, you may qualify for the post-retirement disability benefit of $610.46 a month in 2026. It is paid on top of your retirement pension until you turn 65.

There is no separate form. You apply with the regular CPP disability application. If Service Canada finds you have been receiving the retirement pension for more than 15 months, which blocks the regular disability benefit, it automatically considers you for the post-retirement version instead. You still need valid contributions in 4 of the last 6 years, or 3 of the last 6 years with at least 25 years of contributions in total.

Do children get a CPP disability benefit too

Yes. Each dependent child of a person receiving the CPP disability benefit can get the children's benefit of $307.81 a month in 2026. The child must be under 18, or between 18 and 25 and attending a recognized school or university full time. Part-time students get $153.91.

Worked example: a parent at the average disability amount with two children under 18 would see $1,234.68 for themselves plus $615.62 for the children, or $1,850.30 a month in total. The children's payments are paid to the parent for a minor child, but they count as the child's income for tax purposes.

When the parent turns 65 and the disability benefit converts to a retirement pension, the children's benefit can continue as long as the child still meets the age and school rules.

Is CPP disability taxable

Yes. The CPP disability benefit is taxable income. Service Canada does not withhold tax automatically, so a person living on the benefit alone can owe money in April. You can ask for monthly federal tax deductions through My Service Canada Account or with form ISP3520CPP.

Early each year you receive a T4A(P) slip. The disability portion appears in box 16 and goes on line 11410 of your return; it is already included in the box 20 total on line 11400, so you do not add it twice. For the full list of slip boxes and withholding options, read is CPP taxable.

When the CPP disability benefits amount per month starts and changes

Payments begin four months after the month your disability is found to have become severe and prolonged. The first deposit can include up to 11 months of retroactive payments counted back from the date your application was received. Our CPP retroactive payments page covers back pay in more detail.

Your amount can also stop or be reviewed if you return to work. In 2026 you must tell Service Canada once you earn more than $7,400 before tax. Earnings between $7,400 and $20,971.44 may affect the benefit, and earnings of $20,971.45 or more usually mean you no longer qualify.

Deposits arrive on the same day as other CPP payments. The remaining 2026 dates are October 28, November 26 and December 22. The full schedule is on our CPP disability payment dates page.
