What benefits can seniors get in Canada?
Benefits for seniors in Canada come in four layers: two federal pensions, federal income supplements, provincial top-ups, and tax-time credits the CRA pays out during the year. Most people over 65 receive at least the first layer, and lower-income seniors can receive something from all four.
| Layer | Programs | Who pays | Based on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Federal pensions | Canada Pension Plan (CPP), Old Age Security (OAS) | Service Canada | CPP: work history. OAS: years lived in Canada |
| Federal supplements | Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), Allowance, Allowance for the Survivor | Service Canada | Income from your tax return |
| Provincial top-ups | Ontario GAINS, BC Senior's Supplement, Alberta Seniors Benefit and others | Province | GIS status or provincial income test |
| Tax-time credits | Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, Ontario Trillium Benefit, provincial credits | CRA | Previous year's return |
Quebec residents receive the Quebec Pension Plan from Retraite Quebec instead of CPP, with the same $1,507.65 maximum at 65 in 2026. OAS and GIS are the same in every province.
Federal pensions: CPP and OAS
CPP pays according to how long you worked and how much you contributed. In 2026 the maximum retirement pension at 65 is $1,507.65 a month, but the average for new pensioners at 65 was $877.01 in April 2026 (Canada.ca, CPP payment amounts). Your own estimate is in your My Service Canada Account statement of contributions.
OAS pays by residence, not work. A person with 40 years in Canada after age 18 gets the full $762.50 a month at 65 to 74 for October to December 2026, rising 10% automatically the month after the 75th birthday to $838.75. With fewer years, you get 1/40 of the full amount per year, as long as you have at least 10 years. The CPP payment amounts page breaks down every CPP benefit type.

Start early or late?
CPP can start at 60 with a 0.6% cut for each month before 65, up to 36%, or as late as 70 with 0.7% more per month, up to 42%. OAS cannot start before 65 at all; it can be deferred to 70 for up to 36% more. Before 65, the only OAS-program money is the Allowance, explained in can I get OAS before 65.
Supplements for low-income seniors
The Guaranteed Income Supplement is a non-taxable monthly amount added to OAS for seniors with low income. For October to December 2026, a single, widowed or divorced senior can get up to $1,138.90 a month if income, not counting OAS, is under $23,112 (Canada.ca, OAS payment amounts).
| Your situation | Monthly maximum | Income must be under |
|---|---|---|
| Single, widowed or divorced, GIS | $1,138.90 | $23,112 |
| Partner also receives OAS, GIS each | $685.56 | $30,528 combined |
| Partner receives the Allowance, GIS | $685.56 | $42,768 combined |
| Allowance, ages 60 to 64 | $1,448.06 | $42,768 combined |
| Allowance for the Survivor, 60 to 64 | $1,726.18 | $31,152 |
Worked example: a single 68-year-old with no income other than OAS could receive $762.50 in OAS plus up to $1,138.90 in GIS, or $1,901.40 a month for October to December 2026. Every dollar of other income, such as CPP, reduces the GIS, so the real figure is usually lower. See what GIS is and how it is reduced for the details.
Which senior benefits are automatic?
Some senior benefits start on their own and some require a form. Missing a form can cost months of payments, although CPP can pay back up to 11 months if you apply after 65.
| Benefit | How it starts |
|---|---|
| CPP retirement pension | You must apply; nothing is automatic |
| OAS pension | Many people are enrolled automatically and get a letter after turning 64; otherwise you apply |
| GIS | Service Canada enrols most people; if no letter arrives within a month after turning 64, you may need to apply |
| OAS 10% increase at 75 | Automatic |
| Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit | Automatic when you file a return |
| Ontario GAINS, BC Senior's Supplement | Automatic for GIS recipients who qualify |
| Alberta Seniors Benefit | Application required |
| Canadian Dental Care Plan | Application required, then yearly renewal |
Which senior benefits are provincial?
Several provinces add money for low-income seniors, mostly those already receiving GIS. These are the amounts published for the 2026 benefit year:
- Ontario, GAINS (Guaranteed Annual Income System): up to $92 a month, paid around the 25th. See GAINS payment dates.
- British Columbia, Senior's Supplement: $1.00 to $99.30 a month for a single senior receiving GIS, paid by the province near the end of each month (next on October 27, 2026).
- Alberta Seniors Benefit: up to $3,946 a year for a single senior who owns or rents, for income of $32,690 or less from July 1, 2026. You must apply.
- Newfoundland and Labrador Seniors' Benefit: up to $1,882 a year, full at family income of $30,409 or less, paid with the CGEB.
- Ontario Trillium Benefit: the energy and property tax credit part is larger for seniors who pay rent or property tax, paid monthly around the 10th.
Tax-time credits seniors receive as payments
The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit is the credit most seniors overlook because it arrives separately from pension deposits. For July 2026 to June 2027 it pays up to $679 for a single person and $890 for a couple, on July 3 and October 5, 2026, then January 5 and April 5, 2027.
Higher-income seniors face the reverse: the OAS recovery tax. For 2026 income, 15% of net income above $95,323 is recovered, and OAS stops completely around $152,062 for ages 65 to 74 (October to December 2026 figures). Dental coverage is a separate question; check Canadian Dental Care Plan eligibility because the plan covers many retirees who lost workplace insurance.
Checklist at 64: what to do before your first senior benefit payment
The months before 65 decide whether your first payments arrive on time. Use this list at 64.

Once payments start, CPP and OAS arrive on the same day late each month. The remaining 2026 dates are October 28, November 26 and December 22; 2027 dates are not yet announced. CRA credits appear in your CRA My Account benefits and credits page, and the complete list of CRA benefits shows every other program.
Common questions
What benefits can I get when I turn 65 in Canada?
At 65 you can receive OAS, GIS if your income is low, and an unreduced CPP retirement pension. You also stay eligible for the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit and any provincial seniors top-up, as long as you file a tax return each year.
How much does a senior get from the government in Canada per month?
It depends on work history and income. For October to December 2026, OAS alone is up to $762.50 a month at 65 to 74. A low-income single senior can add up to $1,138.90 in GIS, and CPP adds up to $1,507.65, with an average near $877 for new pensioners.
Do seniors get the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit?
Yes, if their income is low enough and they file a return. It replaced the GST/HST credit in July 2026 and pays up to $679 a year for a single person, in four instalments.
What free benefits are available for seniors over 65 in Canada?
Beyond cash payments, low-income seniors may qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan, which pays dentists directly and has no co-payment below $70,000 of adjusted family net income. Provinces also run drug, housing and property tax programs of their own.
When are senior benefit payment dates in 2027?
They are not yet announced. Service Canada usually posts the next year's CPP and OAS dates late in the year; until then, 2026 ends with the December 22 payment.
