Benefit payments on a long weekend: when your deposit comes early
Short answer
When a benefit payment date lands on a weekend or statutory holiday, the payment goes out on the last business day before it, so it comes early, not late. No 2026 federal calendar date falls on a weekend or holiday. In 2026 this moved eight CCB, OTB and GST/CGEB payments, including the April 2 GST/HST credit before Easter and the Friday, October 9 Ontario Trillium Benefit before Thanksgiving.

How benefit payments work on a long weekend
Benefit payments on a long weekend are moved earlier, never later. Payment days are business days, so when a scheduled date falls on a Saturday, a Sunday or a statutory holiday, the federal government issues the money on the business day before. The payment you expected on a Monday holiday is usually sent the Friday before.
The CRA states this rule directly for the Ontario Trillium Benefit: it is paid on the 10th, or on the last working day before the 10th when that day is a weekend or holiday. The Canada Child Benefit follows the same pattern around its usual date of the 20th. Programs without a fixed day of the month, like CPP and OAS, are simply scheduled on business days to begin with.

Are benefit payments made on weekends?
No federal benefit in the 2026 calendar is issued on a Saturday or Sunday. If you search for benefit payments this weekend, the answer is that any deposit due on the weekend was already sent on Friday. It can still take a few days to show up in your account, which is covered below.
Which 2026 payment dates moved because of weekends or holidays
We compared each program's usual day of the month with the official 2026 calendar. For the CCB, OTB and GST/CGEB, eight payments were issued early. Seven moved to the Thursday or Friday just before, and the December CCB came nine days early. None was pushed to the Monday after.
| Benefit | Usual day | Why it moved | Paid on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ontario Trillium Benefit | January 10 | Saturday | Friday, January 9 |
| GST/HST credit | April 5 | Easter Sunday, after Good Friday | Thursday, April 2 |
| Ontario Trillium Benefit | May 10 | Sunday | Friday, May 8 |
| Canada Child Benefit | June 20 | Saturday | Friday, June 19 |
| Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit | July 5 | Sunday | Friday, July 3 |
| Canada Child Benefit | September 20 | Sunday | Friday, September 18 |
| Ontario Trillium Benefit | October 10 | Saturday, Thanksgiving weekend | Friday, October 9 |
| Canada Child Benefit | December 20 | Holiday schedule | Friday, December 11 |

The GST/HST credit and the CGEB do not have a published fixed day, but the 2026 dates show the pattern clearly: January 5 and October 5 were Mondays, while April 2 and July 3 came early because the 5th was a Sunday. The December CCB is a special case; it is paid well before the 20th every year ahead of the holidays, as explained on the December payment dates page.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Disability Benefit, otherwise paid on the 25th, also came early five times in 2026: January 23, April 24, July 24 and October 23 for weekends, and December 24 for Christmas Day.
Benefit payments on the Easter weekend and other 2026 holidays
Easter weekend
Easter 2026 ran from Good Friday, April 3 to Easter Monday, April 6. The GST/HST credit, normally around the 5th, was issued on Thursday, April 2, because Friday was a holiday and the 5th was Easter Sunday. Apart from the December payments around Christmas, it is the only 2026 payment where a holiday, not just a weekend, pushed the date earlier.
Bank holiday benefit payment dates for the rest of the year
Most long weekends in 2026 did not touch a payment date at all. The table shows each 2026 holiday and the nearest benefit payment.
| Holiday | Date | Effect on payments |
|---|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Thursday, January 1 | None; the OTB on January 9 moved for a Saturday, not the holiday |
| Good Friday and Easter Monday | April 3 and April 6 | GST/HST credit issued early on April 2 |
| Victoria Day | Monday, May 18 | None; CCB paid on its normal date, May 20 |
| Canada Day | Wednesday, July 1 | None directly; CGEB paid July 3 because July 5 was a Sunday |
| Civic Holiday | Monday, August 3 | None; no payment due that week |
| Labour Day | Monday, September 7 | None |
| National Day for Truth and Reconciliation | Wednesday, September 30 | None |
| Thanksgiving | Monday, October 12 | OTB on Friday, October 9, just before the long weekend |
| Remembrance Day | Wednesday, November 11 | None; OTB paid the day before on November 10 |
| Christmas and Boxing Day | December 25 and 26 | CPP and OAS on December 22, veterans on December 23, NL Disability Benefit on December 24, CCB on December 11 |

Why a deposit shows up a day late after a long weekend
The date on the calendar is the day the government issues the payment, not a promise of when your bank posts it. Canada.ca says payments may take a few days to arrive and that mailed cheques can take longer than direct deposit. Banks process on business days, so a payment issued on the Friday before a holiday Monday may not appear until Tuesday at some institutions.
That delay is normal and is not a reason to call. Canada.ca asks people to wait 5 to 10 business days before contacting the program about a missing payment. The CRA sets the wait at 5 working days for the CCB and ACFB and 10 working days for the CGEB, OTB and ACWB. The direct deposit timing page explains what your bank controls.
Worked example: counting working days over Easter
Say an April 2, 2026 GST/HST credit had not arrived. Counting only working days, and treating Good Friday and Easter Monday as holidays, the count runs April 7 to 10 (four days), April 13 to 17 (nine days) and Monday, April 20 (ten). You would call after April 20, not on April 12 as a simple calendar count suggests.
Cheques by mail around holidays
Paper cheques feel holiday delays most. A cheque mailed just before a long weekend loses a delivery day to the holiday. The CRA's benefit payment dates page also notes that wildfires delayed a small number of benefit and credit cheques, while direct deposits went out as scheduled.
- Switch to direct deposit through CRA My Account for CRA benefits, or My Service Canada Account for CPP and OAS; it is the fastest option.
- If you stay on cheques, allow extra days in holiday months such as April, October and December.
- Keep your mailing address current with each program that pays you.
- If a cheque is still missing after the waiting period, ask the program to trace or replace it.
Veterans Affairs Canada payments use their own direct deposit process, covered on the Veterans Affairs Canada payment dates page. For the next year's holiday shifts, watch upcoming CRA payment dates; 2027 dates are not yet announced and usually appear late in the year.
Common questions
Do benefits get paid early on a long weekend?
Yes. If the scheduled date falls on a weekend or statutory holiday, the payment is issued on the last business day before it. It is never pushed to the business day after.
What happens if a CRA payment date is on a Saturday?
It is paid on the Friday before. In 2026 the Ontario Trillium Benefit moved from Saturday, January 10 to Friday, January 9, and the CCB moved from Saturday, June 20 to Friday, June 19.
Why has my benefit deposit not shown up on the Monday after a long weekend?
The payment date is the day it is issued, and banks post deposits on business days. A payment issued before a holiday can appear a day or two later, and canada.ca asks you to wait 5 to 10 business days before reporting it missing.
Was there a benefit payment on Good Friday 2026?
No. The GST/HST credit that would have fallen around Easter was issued on Thursday, April 2, 2026, the business day before Good Friday.
Does a provincial holiday change federal benefit payment dates?
No. The federal calendar lists one date for the whole country, so a holiday observed in only one province, such as Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day in Quebec, does not change it.
